Creating Backyard Privacy

Privacy is a premium feature during summer when so many people spend time outdoors. If you want to avoid feeling like you’re living in a fishbowl, or simply create an intimate oasis in your backyard that blocks out neighbors’ noise and curiosity, check out these suggestions.

FENCE. Let’s start with one of the more obvious options: fencing. There are so many style options when it comes to creating a fence — wood, wrought iron, stone, trellis, or a hybrid — so select what best complements the setting you’re hoping to produce.

PERGOLA. If you’re not looking to block off your entire backyard, but rather a defined area only, a pergola is a trendy option. Pergolas are outdoor structures with columns and a roofing grid, typically consisting of beams and rafters. Creating this type of enclosure creates privacy and it lends itself to being a secondary dining space or area for family gatherings.

OUTDOOR CURTAIN. Perhaps you’re looking for a less permanent (and less costly) option. Fashioning an outdoor curtain to your deck or patio allows you to keep your outdoor as open or closed off as you prefer.
